Sofia explores ambient, electronic, instrumental music and a whole lot of synth for her DJ sets and has a monthly show on Soho Radio.
Sofia gives regular talks on her work in pr/running a label and has been featured in the Guardian on the topic of the rise of female led record labels.
Originally from Cardiff, Wales Sofia’s biggest companion throughout her life has been music. Sofia has a rich and diverse cultural background that has seen her grow through an intriguing mesh of influences. She lived in a temple for 4 years learning about Vedic culture, tradition, and music.
In 2011 Sofia joined Erased Tapes, where she became known as an instrumental force in raising the label’s profile and artists such as Nils Frahm.
In April 2015 Sofia launched Float a PR/Consultancy agency gaining high-profile clients such as Dishoom and Carhartt WIP. She placed DJ Sasha in the Barbican, as well as managing Global PR and events for revolutionary headphone client nura.
Sofia later revealed the record label arm to Float which focuses on music releases, events and fashion. For the labels first event at the Union Chapel, Sofia curated a evening centered around the piano combining jazz, dance and grime to an audience of 600.
“the UK’s Sofia Ilyas at last brings a group of art students out of the bar and onto its feet in front of the stage” - The Quietus
"serves as a reminder that you can break up the mind-sharpening moods of ambient with a beat here or there. There’s a healthy dose of jazz in the rhythms and instrumentation, too, but it’s when restraint goes out the window towards the final 15 that the show takes off." - Crack Magazine
“Sofia Ilyas got the party rolling post-2am. She glided through selections of Kiasmos and Nils Frahm before slamming out some heavier tracks to the likes of Jon Hopkins, Four Tet and Throwing Snow, where young Latvian art students flocked to the front to get their dance fix for the night..” - The Line of Best Fit
